The CHOICES you make, whether good or bad, right or wrong, are ours. Make certain that whatever choice you make in life, you have no regrets when the end has come and all is said and done. Lesson 4: What goes around, comes around (Amen)...and when it (whatever the action) get back to you...it won't look the same, feel the same, or even taste the same, but it will come back...whether positive or negative. Lesson 5: THE LAST LESSon. (Ok this one has some personal references due to the situation so again bare with me and substitute what you have to ya know) I know that right now it may seem like no one in the world loves you, EXCEPT YOUR FRIENDS, but both your sister and your parents love you unconditionally. It is a hard lesson to understand right now because of the hurt and frustation within you, but just realize it later in life. For all my childhood, my friends have been closer to me than my own sister. I use to C, N, Z, and N would move in and replace J. To this day, they know more about me than she does. No matter what, I will always be closer to my girlfriends than my own sister, and she knows this...and is hurt by this realization. Why you ask? It's too long to talk about in this letter, but if you want to know more than what I am about to say tell me in your next letter and I will. In a nutsell, growing up, J never tried to be my sister. As a child it is difficult to love a person who is constantly trying to purposely get you into trouble, boss you around, and mother you rather than be cool, hang out, ect. Now she wants the closeness, and I have found it elsewhere. Do you understand that? As for PARENTS-I tried to fight my parents (not physcially)...really my mother, but in the end...she is the one true friend outside of my girlfriends who I can talk to. When all is said and done and all others have deserted you (even if temporarily), it will be your mother holding your hand and supporting you at your side. And the older YOU get, the more you will see this I hope.

The David and Janet Philips Scholarship was established in honor of David and Janet Philips by their children, Donald, Kimberly, Evan, and Sandra--all ECSU graduates. This scholarship is funded through contributions from family, friends, and colleagues of David Philips, ECSU English Professor Emeritus, who retired from teaching in 1990. It is awarded annually to an undergraduate student who has excelled in the field of English, and has participated in student government, theatre, the sudent literary journal Eastern Exposure, or the Campus Lantern.
